Based on ultra-eccentric Sarah Winchester’s true story, Winchester imagines: What if she was right?
This nicely creepy period ghost story is set in one of America’s truly unusual houses. With 160 rooms built over 38 years with little rhyme or reason to its usability, Sarah Winchester had this mansion built as an offering to the spirits of those killed by her family’s invention, the Winchester Rifle, to appease them and keep them from allowing any more members of her family to die. Winchester delves into the possibility of the spirits’ anger and desire for revenge, while using the house’s unusual layout to its advantage (mostly; I do feel even more could have been done to utilize the craziness of the layout and unusual features to create more scare opportunities). Offering some great jump scares with little gore, Winchester also makes for scary entertainment for those not quite ready for “R”-rated hauntings.
